Villers-la-Ville Abbey

Vol en montgolfiere à l'abbaye de Villers

!!! The take-off site of Villers Abbey is currently unavailable due to construction work. A replacement site is planned nearby in the Mont-Saint-Guibert region.

The ruins of the Cistercian Abbey, founded in 1146, are one of the most prestigious testimonies of the life of the monks of the Cistercian Order.

The Abbey of Villers-la-Ville is one of the major tourist sites in Walloon Brabant. The abbey perfectly respects Cistercian architecture. Around a vast cloister were built the abbey church (completed in the 13th century after 70 years of construction), the monks’ dormitory, the calefactory (early 13th century), the refectory, the kitchen, and the lay brothers’ dormitory. The Abbey reached its peak at the end of the 13th century, was partially devastated in the 16th century, and was definitively abandoned during the French Revolution in 1789 after a final period of glory during the Renaissance. The restoration of the ruins, purchased by the Belgian State at the end of the 19th century, has allowed the preservation of this exceptional heritage.
