Hot air ballooning safety: what you need to know?

Statistically, hot air ballooning is one of the safest modes of transportation. In Europe, this activity is governed by strict regulations. At montgolfiere.be, we are proud of our impeccable record: no accidents, successful inspections, and rigorous safety procedures.

A strictly regulated sector

Commercial hot air balloon flights are subject to specific requirements.

The Civil Aviation Authority (Mobilit) and EASA regulate hot air balloon flights.

Pilots must hold a commercial license obtained after comprehensive examinations in meteorology, aviation law, navigation, physiology, and balloon systems, as well as a Class 2 medical certificate.

Our lead pilot, Benoit Siméons, has logged over 4,000 flights. Commercial Operator Approval At montgolfiere.be, we hold an Air Operator Certificate (AOC light) and comply with all regulations, as the safety of our passengers is our top priority.

Children are welcome in hot air balloons.

Yes, there is no minimum age, but there is a minimum height of 1 meter, which generally corresponds to the age of 5-6 years old.

To prevent children from being frightened by the burner, it is very helpful to show them what a hot air balloon flight is like, for example, on YouTube. This will help alleviate the stress caused by this new activity. The burner flames and the noise are quite impressive.

Unfortunately, there is no special rate for children.

Flights take place early in the morning (just after sunrise) or late in the afternoon (2 to 3 hours before sunset).

These are the times when the light is most beautiful and thermal movements are minimal, allowing for the safe movement of these large balloons. At these times of day, the air masses are most stable.

This is why balloon flights take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon. It is generally the most beautiful time of day for the quality of light (sunrise and sunset). The timing of the flights is also ideal for taking high-quality photos. We naturally don't fly when it's dark. Hot air balloons aren't steered like airplanes and fly with the wind, which is what makes this type of flight so challenging but also so charming. A decision regarding the flight and the launch site in the chosen region must be made no later than 2:30 p.m. on the day of the flight for late afternoon flights and no later than 6:00 p.m. the previous day for morning flights.

Upon arrival, you will receive a full briefing from the pilot (the correct term is aeronaut) before takeoff. This briefing will cover the region you will be flying over, safety instructions, weather conditions, and more.

During this briefing, you will be asked to put your phone in airplane mode to ensure the unique nature of this adventure. You are, of course, welcome to take souvenir photos.

You will be invited to participate (if you wish) in inflating the balloon before takeoff. Inflation is done using powerful fans that inflate the envelope with cold air, which is then heated by burners.

Preparing the balloon takes approximately twenty minutes. It is important that passengers arrive on time for the meeting point specified by text message.

The flight lasts approximately one hour. You'll simply have to gently enjoy the scenery while listening to the commentary and explanations of your experienced pilot.

Before landing, you will be asked to be alert and prepare according to the instructions given.

After landing (the location of which will depend on the wind direction), you'll have the opportunity to participate in packing up the balloon in a fun and friendly atmosphere with our crew.

The adventure will culminate in a champagne toast (yes, real chilled champagne in glass glasses!) with the presentation of a flight certificate and a lovely souvenir hot air balloon keychain.

Hot air ballooning is an eco-friendly mode of transport!

Montgolfiere.be is particularly mindful of this point: we use larger balloons that are oversized to consume as little gas as possible.

We are the world's first operator to use a large-volume, double-envelope commercial balloon designed and manufactured in cooperation with the world's largest hot air balloon manufacturer: Ultramagic. We order our balloons made of Ultralast, an ultra-resistant fabric with a double coating. While significantly more expensive, it is less porous, allowing us to consume less propane per flight and reduce our carbon footprint.

We use high-tech burners developed by Paolo Bonnano, which utilize the Coandă effect to maximize burner efficiency and minimize propane consumption. We ask that you travel light to minimize gas consumption. Our company partners with Carioka to reduce our environmental impact.

A hot air balloon flight offers a gentle and unique way to discover stunning panoramas. You will have the opportunity to admire our regions, sometimes little known, from a completely new perspective. With a 360° panorama, you will enjoy an incomparable view.

We recommend selecting a region close to your home to better appreciate the sites flown over in a friendly atmosphere. During the flight, your passionate pilot will be delighted to share fascinating anecdotes about the region.

Our flights are scheduled from early April to late October. Take-offs take place in the late afternoon (every day depending on weather conditions) or early in the morning (weekends and public holidays only).

Morning flights: You will have the chance to witness nature waking up, with hares, deer, and even families of wild boars. A champagne breakfast will be offered to you after the flight!

If you are afraid of heights, rest assured! Flying in a hot air balloon is a calming adventure that causes neither vertigo nor motion sickness.

This magical experience offers you a feeling of calm and pleasure, far from the intense sensations of extreme sports. Hot air ballooning is a must-do activity to experience at least once in a lifetime.

Unlike other aerial activities, you do not need to fear vertigo; the smoothness of the flight is actually one of its most astonishing features. You will feel an incomparable sense of fullness, almost like yoga in the air.

When you fly over landscapes, calm prevails. You will not feel the wind, because you move with it, offering a feeling of absolute freedom.

There is no vertigo in a hot air balloon. Since the basket is not anchored to the ground, you are freed from sensations of height and sudden movement.

Enjoy your flight!

Unlike what one might imagine, it is not as cold in the air as people think!

There is no need to wear a heavy winter jacket for harsh winters, as the burner will keep you warm! The feeling of cold does not exist since we move along with the wind.

The burner will keep you warm, and it is very effective, which is why we recommend wearing a cap or head covering, especially if you are tall.

Recommended outfit: A good pair of boots, a nice cap (better for photos!) to protect you from the heat of the burner, a pair of gardening gloves, and a relaxed outfit will do the job.

Balloon flights move with the wind, and no feeling of cold is to be expected below 700 m of altitude. We usually fly at 450 m or lower.

As a reminder: At low altitude, the temperature drops by about 1°C for every 150 m you ascend.
