Is it cold during a hot air balloon flight?
Contrary to what you might think, it's not as cold up in the air as you'd expect!
No need to bundle up in your winter coat for harsh conditions; the heater will keep you warm!
You won't feel cold at all since you're moving with the wind.
The heater will keep you warm, and it's incredibly effective, which is why we recommend wearing a cap or hat, especially if you're tall. A good pair of ankle boots, a stylish cap (it looks better in photos ;-)) to protect you from the burner's heat, a pair of gardening gloves, and comfortable clothing will do the trick.
The balloons move with the wind, and there's no need to worry about feeling cold below 700 meters altitude. We generally fly at 450 m or less.
Reminder:
At low altitudes, atmospheric pressure drops by 1 hPa for every 8 meters of altitude gained, and temperature drops by approximately 1°C for every 150 m of altitude gained (ISA value: a loss of 6.5°C per 1000 m, or 1°C per 154 m or 505 feet).
Dress for the Weather, Not for the Altitude
Many first-time passengers are surprised to discover that a hot air balloon flight is usually much more comfortable than they expected. Although the balloon climbs several hundred metres above the ground, the temperature difference at the typical flying altitude is relatively small. In addition, because the balloon travels with the wind, you do not experience the wind chill that you would feel while standing still on the ground or riding in an open vehicle. The burners above the basket also generate warmth whenever they are used, making the environment more comfortable throughout the flight. For these reasons, there is generally no need to wear heavy winter clothing unless the weather on the ground already requires it. We recommend dressing as you would for an outdoor walk at the time of your flight, wearing comfortable layers that can easily be adjusted if needed. Closed shoes are strongly recommended, and a cap or hat is a good idea, especially for taller passengers, as it provides extra protection from the warmth of the burners overhead.
Comfortable in Every Season
Hot air balloon flights take place throughout much of the year, and every season offers its own unique atmosphere. Spring brings colourful landscapes and fresh greenery, summer provides long evenings with spectacular sunsets, autumn offers golden forests and beautiful light, while winter often rewards passengers with exceptional visibility and peaceful scenery. Regardless of the season, comfort mainly depends on wearing clothing suitable for the day's weather rather than focusing on the altitude. Since balloon flights generally remain below 700 metres, the temperature difference compared to ground level is minimal. Most passengers quickly discover that the peaceful sensation of floating through the sky makes them forget about the temperature altogether as they enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across the Belgian countryside.
